Irreversibility and the second law of thermodynamics

چکیده
The second law of thermodynamics has a curious status. Manymodern physicists regard it as an obsolete relic from a bygone age, while many others, even today, consider it one of the most firmly established and secure achievements of science ever accomplished. From the perspective of the foundations of physics, a particularly interesting question is its relationship with the notion of irreversibility. It has often been argued, in particular by Planck, that the second law expresses, and characterises, the irreversibility of all natural processes. This has led to much debated issues, such as whether the distinction between past and future can be grounded in the second law, or how to reconcile the second law with an underlying microscopic mechanical (and hence reversible) theory. But it is not easy to make sense of these debates since many authors mean different things by the same terms. The purpose of this paper is to provide some clarification by distinguishing three different meanings of the notion of (ir)reversibility and to study how they relate to different versions of the second law. A more extensive discussion is given in [23].

Chemical kinetic model includes 20 reactions and 9 species. At the first stage of p...

متن کاملStatistical mechanical derivation of the second law of thermodynamics
In a macroscopic (quantum or classical) Hamiltonian system, we prove the second law of thermodynamics in the forms of the minimum work principle and the law of entropy increase, under the assumption that the initial state is described by a general equilibrium distribution. Therefore the second law is a logical necessity once we accept equilibrium statistical mechanics. Note added (December, 200...
متن کاملBluff your way in the Second Law of Thermodynamics
The aim of this article is to analyse the relation between the second law of thermodynamics and the so-called arrow of time. For this purpose, a number of different aspects in this arrow of time are distinguished, in particular those of time-(a)symmetry and of (ir)reversibility. Next I review versions of the second law in the work of Carnot, Clausius, Kelvin, Planck, Gibbs, Carathéodory and Lie...
متن کاملStructure formation and generalized second law of thermodynamics in some viable f(R)-gravity models
We investigate the growth of matter density perturbations as well as the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in the framework of f(R)-gravity. We consider a spatially flat FRW universe filled with the pressureless matter and radiation which is enclosed by the dynamical apparent horizon with the Hawking temperature. For some viable f(R) models containing the Starobinsky, Hu-Sawicki, Exp...
